Since we've been busy with the kitchen, I've been window shopping for some new accessories. While a salt pig may not be your cup of tea, the idea of having salt at my finger tips while cooking makes me go weak in the knees. Besides, it's red! You really can't go wrong.

Wrapping Paper Station
Yup, we have a wicked problem. I hoard wrapping paper like it's going extinct - so I knew there was something that needed to be done. In the past, when a gift needed to be wrapped, we would have to haul out this box of paper - which, mind you, is completely falling apart - and the bag of ribbon from the back pits of the coat closet. We would have to scramble around to find a good pair of scissors and pen along with tape from the kitchen all the while hoping that the pen would work and that we had enough of the seasonal paper.
Definitely not ideal.
In the process of revamping the office, we had a dead space behind the door that we knew would just be perfect! After a quick trip to IKEA for the two baskets and Bed, Bath, and Beyond for the curtain rods, it took Huynh a couple of hours of leveling and screwing before we had the perfect little wrapping paper organizer! Yippee!

Bench it // Outside love
I can almost guarantee that if I can't find Huynh, he is outside working on the yard. He built this bench (why yes, those are Ikea planters turned upside-down!) for our front patio which instantly gave it an uplift. He also planted our garden, planted some rose bushes and completely overhauled the back patio. Gatsby seems to enjoy the sweet orange tree - he regularly buries his bone right next to it - and I'm excited about the veggie yield. If only we can get the hot weather to cooperate, perhaps we might enjoy a glass of wine on our back porch - for now, I look at it from the comfort of A/C.

Thesi Pool Loveseat
{cb2}
We plan on moving within a year or so which has sort of forced a self-inflicted "no furniture buying" policy. Then of course, like clockwork, all I find are pieces that I have to have now. West Elm has been putting out the vibes for a couple of weeks but shut the front door when I saw this sassy little CB2 number! Perfect... for the foot of our king size bed in our new house perhaps? Lust.

Tease
Really, West Elm. You are going to play dirty. You know I already have a weakness for the Elton Settee. You know that I look at it almost daily. I was going to be good today... I wasn't going to place it in my shopping cart for the umpteenth time but then you had to go and tease me with your tracking and email ploys. You're right, I do in fact see something that I like on your site. A lot of things. And even though said settee would look great in the remodeled office, I have to resist. I have to resist the curved back with tufting... the dark legs and velvet fabric. Such a tease.

Office, begins
Last night we had to scramble like mad in order to completely clear out the office in preparation for the carpet guys to come bright and early this morning. They came, they saw, they stretched and it looks so much better... but now I am stuck with what to do with all the junk that came out of there! Tonight: organize, reevaluate, recycle, and start the move back in there. Time to tackle the office once and for all.

Color Personality
Better Homes and Garden (take the quiz here) put out an excellent time spender that I snuck in at work last week. Rather surprising was my color personality. I actually love yellow but have a tough time decorating with it and more often than not, stick to classic blues when I need to inject color in my grey house.
Not surprising, however, was my answer to question four.

Kitchen gadgets
Le Creuset Batter Bowl I find this to be the best mixing bowl for small jobs. The handle and spout makes it super easy to pour and it is light enough that I can hold it with one hand while scraping out the yummy goodness with the other - versus hollering at Huynh to come and help.
KitchenAid Mixer I have blogged about my love of my mixer before but I still can't get enough. I have already started researching sausage recipes to make my own and have already planned on a cake for a mini-celebration Huynh and I will be having mid-May (we celebrate being awesome).
Cleaver Granted, we don't have a Wustof cleaver (in my dreams) but I really find myself reaching for the cleaver to do anything from chopping onions to manhandling meat. I don't know why - or how - it got such a bad rap but really, I love it.
Mini Spatulas For a hostess gift, my friend Pam gave us mini-spatulas and I have to say, I find myself reaching for those more than anything. They won't scratch my Calphalon and better yet, they are heat resistant... and oh, so adorable.
Pyrex Covered Bakeware Emphasis on covered. While yes, saran wrap works just fine at covering dishes for leftovers, these lids allow you to stack things on top of them. In the refrigerator. Yes.
Chef'n Garlic Zoom Chopper I have also blogged about this before but let me reiterate: it is amazing. Easy to clean and does such a fantastic job of mincing garlic (we eat a lot of it). In fact, we have been known to go through entire heads of garlic in one week - and just think of all the time we are saving with this tool!

Five Things
New summer arrivals are at West Elm! Bring on the days where I would rather be sitting outside in my cabana by my pool.

Cleaning woes
It's just the two of us. The two of us in a 1650+ square foot house with one four-legged furry beast that delights in eating bones on the rug and jumping on the couch to spread his hair shedding wealth when we aren't looking. The two of us who actually probably only use half of the house - one room and one bathroom stay closed unless we have company, the office is only opened when I'm feeling excited to pin. We wake up in the morning and make a path from the bedroom to the bathroom to the kitchen and out the door, stopping briefly for a minute to feed the dog who by that time is already planning his escape or, more likely, his next nap spot. He prefers to sun in the backyard in the morning, then once it heats up in the afternoon, he moves inside to the coolness of the tile floor. By the time we get home, he has convinced himself that we have been gone for months, were never returning, and that he is starving. Mind you, he's not. He maintains his weight very nicely according to his vet. He needs to get over that... but the point being, while we are gone, he has full reign over his minions in the backyard, which include a stuffed duck and doughnut, and only about a 3'x4' slab of tile right in front of the backdoor inside. With exception taken for when we have the occasional rainstorm and he manages to throw his little 30lb body against his crate to break free to the rest of the house, he doesn't do much to add to the hair dust bunnies in the corners of the house.
Ah yes, the dust bunnies.
I get home at night, and after pretty much making the same path taken upon leaving for the day, I do the daily struggle with what to do. Up there with my desire to not workout is my desire to not clean. Sure I will do the dishes sometimes; I try to wipe down the kitchen counter-tops too. Huynh is good about vacuuming up that pesky dog hair from the living room rug but aside from that, we are both guilty of finding our couch much more comfortable than bending over a toilet and cleaning it. The only time our house gets a top to bottom clean job is on the weekend when we do a marathon cleaning session which is, one, never fun and, two, a great way to waste a perfectly beautiful day. We end up exhausted; I end up napping. It's these days that Huynh is a rock star because not only does he help on the inside of the house, he is also tackling the outside (where I tend to be of no help). I have known something has needed to change for a time now, and even attempted to start a daily cleaning regimen but just nothing ever stuck. And for us, who really only use a fraction of our house, it really shouldn't be that difficult to keep maintained.
Enter Jenny. Yesterday, she posted her cleaning trick and it's ingenious - a chore chart! I agree with her; I become envious when I go over to another friend's house and it is immaculate. I marvel that they found the time to not only clean but look beautifully showered, well-rested, and are wearing lipstick as they greet us at the door with a plate of freshly baked cookies and a tall glass of iced tea. Their house is not only tidy but clean. Sure, I can make a tidy house but the operative word there is clean. I want to maintain a clean house - for me and my sanity.
So we are going to try it. I modified hers a bit to make it more conducive to us. We do better if we gradually do launder clothes instead of waiting until the weekend. Besides, I have to keep reminding myself, it is just the two of us. We don't produce quite the amount of clothing that I know you readers with kiddos produce so laundering a little bit every day works for us. I also know that we can't plan to do anything on Fridays - or Saturdays for that matter. Best to leave the weekend as the weekend.
Tonight starts off with a bang: I have to clean the bathroom. Or rather, I GET to clean the bathroom!!! Oh joy. I will be sure and keep you posted.

Weekend, recap
This weekend was not only packed but went by way too quickly as was evidenced when we both overslept this morning.
Oops.
Let's get on with this, shall we?
Thursday (close enough to the weekend?), for lunch, I went to La Madeleine. Huynh... well, I'm not sure if he is a fan or not but suspiciously, he always turns his nose up when I suggest it - as I do when he suggests Indian. It's not like I don't like Indian... I just like so many other things SO MUCH better. Huynh has a work lunch meeting every Thursday so I jumped at the opportunity to head over to La Madeleine for a quaint little lunch.
Yes, still on a diet but you will be impressed how this meal broke down:
Reduced-Fat Tomato Basil Soup, Cup
Calories: 120kCal; Total Fat: 9g
Caesar Salad with Chicken, Regular w/ fat-free Caesar dressing
Calories: 420kCal; Total Fat: 20g
{via}
So good right? Next time, I am going to get the salad without chicken which brings down the total meal calorie count down from 540kCal to 300kCal and still equally as filling.
And, it just looks so darn pretty.
Friday we went to Goodwill and Half-Priced Books to fill up our bookshelf that Huynh built. We ended up with ~69 books for less than $2 each! We got some classics (Canterbury Tales, Sense and Sensibility), some that we've always wanted to read (some Jennifer Weiner books, Bob Bullock: God Bless Texas, French Women Don't Get Fat), and other randoms (Why Do Men Have Nipples, Frommers: Virgin Islands, Visiting Picasso). We were this close to buying a set of encyclopedias but didn't pull the trigger. Maybe next time.
My guilty pleasure is buying books so you know I was in heaven... especially since we dined on crawfish afterwards. Yummy. By the way, those books only filled up only 1/7 of the bookshelf. Literally. We plan on indexing them. Yup, nerds.
Saturday night, we saw Meagan, Pam, Becky, and all of their significant others for a rowdy game of Kings. Of course, the only picture I took was of my PBR tall boy. This girl has class.
We followed up the concert with a fried twinkie and fried snickers bar. Nice ending to a good weekend.

Neon
{via}
I am drawn to these tubs like moths to a flame. If I were to redo a bathroom, I would go with subway tiles up to the chair rail, metro hex tiles on the floor, honed marble countertops (heck, may even go with marble floors) and that. A claw foot tub painted neon. I love the green but could probably only sell Huynh on blue, though secretly I would wish that he would let me paint it hot pink.
Regardless it would be amazing.

Wall Hangings
And that just barely scratches the surface of all that I have bought to hang on the wall. I love me some art.
I have been all over the place lately. The wedding planning is obviously in full swing (we booked a photographer!), are still on a mission for a videographer, and have been shopping for dresses... as in shower, party, engagement picture, dresses. It's amazing how many you need to have. The Knot recommended something like "budget ~8% of your total wedding budget to miscellaneous". At the time, I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. If you are having a $100k wedding - clarify: we aren't - but if you were, that's $8000. You are telling me that you need to essentially have an $8000 cushion for things that you can't allocate into their other pretty categories? Maybe it's my math mind talking, but I would prefer knowing where that money is going to.
I say that as I'm looking at ties for groomsmen to wear that we are going to give them and I realize that 8% probably isn't too far off. It's not like we knew when we set the budget that I was basically going to have to have these because DIY slitting corks is near to impossible. So yes, my new clothing purchases also fall into that "miscellaneous" category but I couldn't resist! They were just too darn me.
I also go back and forth on whether we need a bench cushion for our dining room table. Admittedly, Huynh has always been on board and, in fact, pushes for it whenever we go into West Elm (using our West Elm dollars of course). The original offering was lackluster so I never pulled the trigger but their latest is pretty amazing... so I'm leaning towards yes.
Like I said, I'm all over the place.
As for work? Oh that. I'm currently trying to develop a calculation for PSVs in supercritical service. Yup, you see why I never talk about it here. Happy Leap Day!

Holiday haze
My mind is still on vacation. I like to think that it's some sort of holiday haze that I am stuck in and eventually I will surface and be ready to go... but instead I sleep in and show up an hour late to work. Oops. Thank goodness for three-day weeks.
I'm still on the look out for a centerpiece for our dining room table and am loving what Morgan put together over at The Brick House. I love all of her designs - go ahead and peek around - but this "free" redo of a friend's house was just too much to handle. That aside, succulants as a centerpiece? I think I'm on the right track.
Happy hump day.

Weekend, recap
We not only cleaned the house, we also hung the longhorn, finished the stool, moved the dining room light fixture, accepted shipment of the table, took pictures of the bathroom (including capturing a nice Lady and the Tramp quote that we start the day off with) and finished all of our Christmas shopping! We finally got euro pillows for the master bedroom, picked up three pictures of Gatsby for dog ornament frames we have hanging on the tree, and watched New Year's Eve, stand up comedians on Netflix, Bad Teacher, and The High Cost of Living. Phew, busy weekend (and all in two days!).
Oh and we ate Korean bar-b-que. It was delish.
How was your weekend? Did you brave the crowds and attempt shopping?

Falalalala-lalalala
{howdy from santa}
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at the Pham household... and, with the temperatures dropping, it's even beginning to feel a lot like winter which leads to cuddling and hot chocolate - both of which I approve of.
Just saying.
I picked up the santa pillow at a cute boutique in Wichita Falls last year after Christmas. At the time, I got caught up in the thrill of finding it and subsequently being hunted by another woman who was just waiting for me to put it down which just furthered my obvious desire to purchase it even more. I love it.
{outside}
{entry way}
{tree}
{ornaments}
{"mantle"}
{kitchen}
{gatsby, napping}
Outside are some Canton purchases and an adorable rug that Mimi found for us a couple of years ago. The entry way has our UT tree, complete with the 2011 UT Radko ornament, and my Waterford nativity (still on the lookout for the rest of the pieces to be for sale). Our tree holds two of my favorite ornaments, 2011 snowman - I have 2010 also - which represent every year Huynh and I have celebrated Christmas together - and the rockin' Texas cowboy santa sitting in a horse shoe. That sentence alone is cool.
Our faux mantle - aka TV stand - has my UT bowl plate (in case it's hard to read: "The Longhorns were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of bowl games danced in their heads."), while the kitchen has the glitteriest snowflake, ornaments in our bread bowl on the bar, and a snowman dish towel hanging from the oven.
11 days 'til Christmas, y'all. Ho, ho ho!
